Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee said Wednesday’s mandate in the Lok Sabha proved that the United Progressive Alliance regime was a “minority government” and it must take a “fresh verdict from the people.”

“It is a shame! The mandate today proves that the UPA-II is a minority government,” Ms. Banerjee posted on her Facebook page after the Opposition motion seeking withdrawal of the Centre’s decision to allow 51% FDI in retail was rejected.

“As against the majority figure of 271, based on the total strength of the House, the support was only 253, despite all attempts made by the selfish people,” the West Bengal Chief Minister said, adding the Manmohan Singh government had lost its “credibility.”
