Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily on Friday described the law relating to sedition as outdated and asserted that the government would revisit the legislation and see how it could be updated. Speaking to journalists after the Supreme Court granted bail to civil rights activist Binayak Sen, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Chhattisgarh court on charges of sedition, Mr. Moily said he would soon consult Home Minister, P. Chidambaram and refer the matter to the Law Commission for a review.
Noting that there was a debate that the sedition law did not reflect on the democratic aspirations of the country and the spirit of Constitution, he said the bail granted to Dr. Sen also reflected upon the investigations carried out by the Chhattisgarh police.
