It is time for The Hindu Young World quiz competition, and the 11th edition of the all-India contest will be held in 16 centres this year.
The 2010 edition will also celebrate 20 years of the ever popular Young World .
The Hindu -NIE initiative kicks off on Thursday, October 21, in Vijayawada, and ends with a grand finale in Chennai on November 25. The new centres to host the regional rounds this year are Salem, Hubli and Tirupati. The mega event will be held in the following centres (see table for dates): Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Salem, Bangalore, Hubli, Mangalore, Kozhikode, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Tiruchi, Madurai, Puducherry, Tirupati and Chennai.
Guidelines
The following are the guidelines for schools:
— Any two students from Classes VII to IX can form a team, and a maximum of four teams from each school can participate in the quiz.
— The completed entry cards should reach the centres on the prescribed dates mentioned in the circular sent to schools. The top portion of the entry cards will be sent back to the schools, and the participants must carry this to the venue. Photocopies will not be accepted.
— Entry is free.
— Six teams will be selected for the regional finals based on a written preliminary round at each centre, both of which will be held on the same day.
The winning team from each region will quality for the final.
— For outstation teams qualifying for the final, and for one accompanying parent or teacher, The Hindu will bear the cost of travel, boarding and lodging.
— Certificates will be given to all participants.
Prize money more than doubled
There are grand prizes to be won. The prize money for the winner in the grand final has been more than doubled from last year to Rs.50,000. The second prize will be Rs.40,000 and the third Rs.30,000.
The fourth, fifth and sixth places will carry Rs. 10,000 each.
For the regional rounds, the first prize is Rs.15,000, followed by Rs.12,000 for the second, Rs.10,000 for the third and Rs. 2,000 each for the fourth-sixth positions.
Nano car
Above all, there is something for the family. The families of the two participants in the winning team will get a bonus — a Tata Nano car each.
