International experts will review the flood preparedness of the nuclear power plant sites and also come out with new regulations for Tsunami safety along the Indian coast next week.

The review will be done at a five-day international workshop on flood hazards in the nuclear power plant sites.

“Organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the workshop will be held at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu from January 11,” Prabir Chandra Basu, Director of civil and structural engineering of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board said.

The workshop, which will be attended by over 70 delegates from India and abroad, will review Tsunami and other flooding hazard preparedness in all the nuclear plant sites across the world, he said.

“This review will be a backup for evolving new regulations on Tsunami safety,” he said. Delegates will present research and actual work done on the ground regarding Tsunami hazard assessment, Tsunami warning system and disaster management during the last five years.

On December 26, 2004, Tsunami hit the Indian ocean following a severe earthquake near Sumatra in Indonesia where thousands were killed.

India, Sri Lanka and Thailand too bore the brunt.

Ten nuclear scientists and a few construction workers were also killed at the Kalpakkam site.
