March 23, 2014 01:41 am | Updated May 19, 2016 10:44 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Tihar jail inmate Fasih Mehmood, accused of terror activities and deported from Saudi Arabia in 2012, was injured on Friday after he was allegedly attacked by a fellow prisoner in the jail complex.

Fasih’s family members and the jail authorities provided different accounts of the nature of the injury.

Describing the incident as a skirmish, a jail official said the injuries were minor and Fasih was discharged the same day from the hospital. Talking to The Hindu , Fasih’s brother, Sabih, however, termed it a motivated attack by a fellow prisoner Harsimran, a ‘notorious character.’ Fasih and Harsimran, both undertrials, are lodged in Jail Number 2.

‘Callous approach’

“I met Fasih at the Patiala House Courts today (Saturday). He told me that he fell into a drain and fractured his leg after being pushed by Harsimran,” said Sabih, who accused the jail authorities of being callous towards the safety of his brother.

According to Tihar spokesperson Sunil Gupta, the incident took place around 5 p.m. after Harsimran and Fasih were returning to the jail following their weekly meeting with family members. “Soon an argument broke out between Fasih and Harsimran and the latter pushed him. Harsimran was overpowered and Fasih was taken to the Deen Dayal Hospital and discharged later.”

Probe ordered

The jail authorities added that a case was registered and an inquiry is being ordered.

Sabih demanded that the CCTV footage from the area be looked into to establish the sequence of events. He said the court had ordered that Fasih be taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for further medical examination. Mr. Gupta said Fasih would be taken to AIIMS on Sunday.

Harsimran has several cases, including murder and attempt to murder, registered against him.
