Abu Faisal, who the police say is the mastermind of the Khandwa jailbreak, was arrested on Tuesday at Sendhawa in Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh.
Faisal is one of the six escapees, all allegedly members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). He is being probed for his role in the September 13, 2008 blasts in Delhi and the July 26, 2008 blasts in Ahmedabad.
Faisal was arrested, along with Khalid Ahmed of Sholapur [Maharashtra] and Irfan Nagori of Mehidpur [Ujjain], in Sendhawa, 350 km west of Bhopal, at 2 a.m. “There was an exchange of fire, though neither the accused nor the policemen were hit,” Director-General of Police Nandan Dube said.
Mr. Dube said they had moved in four States to evade arrest.
The three men were being questioned and a case has been registered at the Sendhawa Rural police station.
In the early hours of October 1, the six persons, accused of murder, dacoity and communal violence, broke open the ventilator of their barrack and scaled the wall with blankets tied together into a rope. When constables on patrol Lokesh Hirwa and Suresh Tiwari challenged them, the SIMI members stabbed them several times and fled with their wireless sets, bolt action rifles and motorcycle.
