Three soldiers injured, driver dead in militant attack

May 04, 2017 08:11 pm | Updated 10:40 pm IST - Srinagar

Three soldiers were injured and a driver killed as militants opened fire at an army mobile patrol in Shopian district. Meanwhile, a gunfight erupted in Kulgam's Kudwani village after militants and security forces exchanged fire during a search operation.

A Srinagar-based army spokesman said there was an exchange of fire with the militants when an Army column was returning. "The operation is under progress," he said. The incident took place at Shopian's Keelora area.

Three soldiers sustained injuries in the attack. A civilian driver, identified as Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, was killed in the attack.

Pertinently, a day long operation was launched in Shopian earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, an encounter has started in Kulgam's Kudwani area. Preliminary reports suggest hiding militants fired upon a search party of security forces.

The firing was followed by stone pelting by locals. Unconfirmed reports suggest two militants are trapped in the area.
