The Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for election to the office of the President of India soon after all polls for the vacant parliamentary and Assembly constituencies are over in April.

“The bypolls for three parliamentary and 12 Assembly constituencies will be held in April, following which the schedule for the presidential election will be finalised,” said an official. Pranab Mukherjee’s tenure ends on July 25.

Details sought

The EC had started planning for the presidential election last December. “On December 29, we sought State-wise details of the members of the Electoral College from the respective Chief Electoral Officers, Secretary Generals of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and Secretaries of all the Legislative Assemblies. In total, there are 4,120 Assembly seats, 233 Rajya Sabha and 543 Lok Sabha seats.”
