Party to take into consideration small, medium traders’ interest
After vociferously opposing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the multi-brand retail sector, the DMK on Wednesday appeared to tone down its stand on the issue, saying it would take a final decision taking into consideration the interest of small and medium traders.
When asked by reporters whether the DMK would support the resolution to be moved in Parliament by Left parties and others against the FDI proposal, Mr. Karunanidhi said his party would express its opinion after consulting party MPs.
On October 1, after a party executive committee meeting, he had said if any party moved a resolution against the FDI decision, the DMK would support it.
A resolution adopted by the executive committee had also urged the Centre to reconsider its decision on allowing FDI in the retail sector in view of opposition from many quarters.
On Wednesday, asked to spell out his position categorically instead of keeping everyone in suspense on whether the party would support the opposition-sponsored resolution, Mr. Karunanidhi said that as one who had written the screenplay and dialogues for more than 100 films, he would say “suspense” was an element that would ensure any movie’s success.
When it was pointed out to him that small traders had serious apprehensions about the proposal and asked what was the need for any suspense about the party‘s stand, he said the DMK would take into account the fear of small traders while taking a decision.
Reservation issue
In a separate statement, he called upon the state government to implead itself in a case related to reservation in Punjab, as its outcome would have a bearing on the exclusive reservation given to the Arundathiyar community in Tamil Nadu.
He said the three per cent exclusive reservation for Arundathiyars, a Dalit community, had been challenged in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court and the court had been informed about the reservation case in Punjab that awaits judgment in the Supreme Court.

"Heads you win tails I loose" scenario for DMK. If they go against FDI in retail, they will have to leave UPA and loose what ever political power they currently posses. If they go for FDI in retail, their future is bleak. Either way the elections for Lok sabha are a year away, by then a lot can happen. Whatever the outcome of toss, DMK is bound to loose. So they prefer not to participate in decision, just like the way they handled Tamil Eelam. Then claim whatever good happened was because of them.
This we can quote as a text book example of Opportunism by M.K
One more drama from the grand old man in line with several other dramas enacted by him. On the day of voting, he will mostly fall in line with Sonia Madam ( in the name of Coalition Dharma) or will ask him MPs to abstain from voting. He is probably trying to do some negotiations. He is surely NOT interested in the well being of the people. If yes, why can't he put the pressure on the Union Government to help in getting the additional Electricity for the State ?
FDI in Retail will be thro in Parliament when introduced. DMK cannot antagonize UPA at this juncture. If a general election is to be held DMK will loose the existing strength seeing the peoples mood outside. This will be en cashed by their rivals AIDMK.Better stick on to UPA till they regain sympathy
Tamil Nadu chief minister has already stated that she would not support FDI and, with parliamentary election approaching fast, DMK is in a bind to weigh their options carefully. He could only hope for congress passing the FDI without DMK support DMK can also expect some fire works in the parliament on UN Eelam Tamil's report. Next parliamentary session is going to be a reality check time for DMK.
Unfortunately, Mr. Karunanidhi is yet to recognize the failure of many if his recent scripts, both on and off the silver screen.
Leaders like Kalaignar are the soul of a society. some of our netizens seem to prefer people like modi. politics is a fine art and the best leaders and their unwavering thoughts steer a society with commitment to persuasion dialogue and accomodation. however, voters sometimes like to be fatalistic and go in for the supposedly strong individual. what suffers is the onward development and discussion model, which is replaced by the model of fiat.
FDI in retail is a must for our country.I do not know why our politicians are duping our people.OUR people are illiterate and are submerged in superstisions .Definitely farmers will get a fair price. As per the policy FDI will come to a city where population is above 10 lakhs and 30% of the investment is going to infrastructre. While in power BJP has proposed the same thing which they are opposing. The entire oppsition parties are not INTERESTED in developing the country.GOD alone can save India
