Dense fog hits rail services across India

December 24, 2012 02:07 am | Updated 02:07 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Adding to the winter woes, dense fog has thrown into disarray train services, affecting lakhs of passengers across the country.

More than 250 trains have been affected in the current phase of fog since Friday. As many as 104 trains were running behind schedule up to 26 hours. No less than 54 trains have been cancelled, diverted or short cancelled across the country due to the spiralling effect of the fog. Consequently, more than 91 trains have been rescheduled up to December 26 from their originating points, which includes stations less affected by fog such as Madgaon, Bangalore, Shirdi and Mumbai. Other stations from where trains have been delayed include Patna, Lucknow, Howrah, Guwahati, Jammu Tawi, Bhopal, Amritsar, Allahabad, Udhampur and Jhansi.

The efforts of the Railways to overcome the problem of fog have been far from satisfactory.
