The Delhi police on Wednesday issued a strongly worded statement refuting the claims of a security lapse at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here made by a journalist of Australia's Channel 7. He had smuggled a suitcase containing a case for an explosives detonation kit past a security cordon.
Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat termed the sting operation “totally bogus and incorrect.” He said journalist Mike Duffy was trying to “create a false impression of security breach by walking through barricades placed on the main road to divert vehicles.”
He said the place where the footage was shot was far from the stadium's main entry gate from where manual checking was done and that the journalist had not reached the check point.
Referring to comments on the ease with which explosives were purchased in Delhi, Mr. Bhagat remarked that the sting operation “seems to be motivated and deliberately planted.” “The journalist does not even know that ammonium nitrate is a fertilizer and a non-prohibited item for sale in India.”
