The Delhi government on Wednesday recommended the name of eminent Hindi novelist Maitreyi Pushpa as the new chief of the Delhi Commission for Women and communicated the same to Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung. Presently, the DCW is headed by Congress leader and ex-MLA from R.K. Puram Barkha Singh.
The suggestion has come in the backdrop of the Aam Aadmi Party-led government accusing Ms. Singh of “politicising” the role of her office while dealing with the midnight raid episode allegedly involving Law Minister Somnath Bharti.
Urban Development Minister Manish Sisodia told reporters on Wednesday that bodies (independent institutions) working outside the ambit of the Delhi government should ideally have non-political heads and cited the government’s decision to reform the way in which members are selected for the governing bodies under Delhi University.
Ms. Singh accused the government of harassing her for summoning Mr. Bharti in connection with the South Delhi raid episode and refused to step down.
