The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Wednesday extended till December 31, 2010 the deadline for the mobile phone operators to complete the re-verification of their subscribers.
“The service providers approached the DoT in October this year for extension of the deadline. They stated that the creation of infrastructure for re-verification had taken some time. Now since the re-verification activities are in full swing, the operators need some more time to complete the process,” the DoT said in a statement.
The DoT had asked the operators to complete the process over one year, starting from November 1, 2009, and fixed October 31, 2010 as the deadline.
After considering all aspects and holding consultations with security agencies, it extended the deadline till December 31, it added.
In view of the security concerns, the Communications Ministry has also proposed new verification norms.
Under one of them, the operators should send SIM cards to subscribers by registered post or through messengers on the rolls of the company.
