A mob broke into the central Jail in Dimapur, Nagaland, and lynched a rape-accused after dragging him out on Thursday afternoon. The mob also set a police vehicle and several private vehicles ablaze and torched a few houses in Dimapur town, the commercial hub of Nagaland.
The deceased was identified as Farid Khan. He was in jail on charges of raping a Naga girl on February 23.
Director General of Police, Nagaland, L.L. Doungel, who rushed to Dimapur, told The Hindu that curfew had been clamped in the city, where the situation continued to be volatile. “The rape accused is said to be an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant,” the DGP said. Some arrests had been made.
Some local residents said a large number of people had had been arriving in Dimapur town since Thursday morning to protest the alleged rape incident.
Around 3 pm a section of protestors turned violent and marched towards the jail, about six km from the rally venue.
The mob barged into the jail and dragged out the accused, identified and beat him following which he Dimapur district administration clamped Section 144 Cr P.C. in the entire town on Wednesday following angry protest against the alleged rape.
