In view of the rising crimes against women and shortage of police personnel, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Vinod Tawde (BJP) on Tuesday met the Mumbai Police Commissioner to request him to reduce his security cover from 10 policemen to two.
In a letter to Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh, Mr. Tawde said in the light of recent attacks on women he felt he had no right to continue with his security cover. The police and the Home Minister often blamed the lack of personnel for the rising crimes against women.
At a time when the police were falling short in providing protection to the common man, it was almost criminal to be surrounded by so many policemen, Mr. Tawde pointed out. He said he would like to send back eight policemen and requested the Police Commissioner to deploy them for the security of ordinary people.
The State government is also reviewing the security cover provided to many political leaders. Nationalist Congress Party MP Supriya Sule recently called for cuts in VIP security cover.
