Curfew in Magam town after rival villagers clash

Curfew was on Tuesday imposed in Magam town in central Kashmir following a clash between residents of two villages over an “old issue” on Monday night, police said.

“Curfew was promulgated in Magam town and adjoining villages as a precautionary measure this morning after residents of Kangamdur and Hagurpur clashed last night over a piece of land, which is a decades old issue in the area,” SSP, Budgam, Aftab Ahmad Kakroo said.

No one was hurt in the clash, he said.

The trouble started when unidentified miscreants pulled down a hoarding put up by a particular community on the piece of land in the honour of a renowned spiritual leader of Iran, police said.

This infuriated the community members, who took to streets and indulged in stone-pelting on the houses of the rival community, resulting in clashes in at least over a dozen villages of Magam, they said.

Strongly denying any sectarian violence in the villages, the SSP said it was only a tussle between two villages as a result of some “misunderstanding“.

“We have invited the village elders and are sorting out the issue amicably,” the SSP said, adding the situation in the town is under control.

Heavy police deployment was made in various parts of adjoining Pattan area of Baramulla district as a precautionary measure.
