The Congress on Wednesday won the Yavatmal Assembly seat in the by-election necessitated due to the death of its MLA Nilesh Deshmukh Parvakar in an accident in January this year.

The Congress’ Nandini Nilesh Deshmukh Parvekar, Mr. Parvekar’s wife, defeated her nearest contestant, the BJP’s Madan Yerewar, by 15,233 votes.

Ms. Parvekar polled 62,509 votes as against the 47,276 votes polled by Mr. Yerevar. The by-poll was in the news for the unsuccessful attempts by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithivraj Chavan and the Congress to get Ms. Parvekar elected unopposed.

In a press statement, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President president Manikrao Thackeray said Ms. Parvekar’s win was a tribute to her late husband.
