In the wake of the Karnataka government winning the trust vote, the Congress core group met late on Monday evening to consider whether it should accept Governor H.R. Bhardwaj's recommendation to impose President's rule in the State.
Informed sources later told The Hindu that after discussing the pros and cons of the situation, and the possible political fallout of the Central action, it was decided that the Governor's report should be kept under consideration. A final view is likely to be taken when the Union Cabinet meets on Tuesday.
By then, the Centre would also be able to factor in the Karnataka High Court's ruling in the case of the 16 MLAs, who have challenged their disqualification by Speaker K.G. Bopaiah ahead of the trust vote on Monday, the sources added. The ruling is expected around 10.30 a.m.
The sources said the Centre could either accept the Governor's report and impose President's rule or direct the Governor to tell the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly to repeat the floor test, this time with division.
