The Congress on Wednesday apologised for senior party leader Virbhadra Singh’s threat to mediapersons that their cameras would be broken on being questioned about allegations of corruption against him.
“If anyone is hurt, we apologise,” party spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit said when asked to react to the incident.
Terming as “unfortunate” Mr. Singh’s remarks, the party said such things can sometime happen in the midst of an election campaign.
“We do not know the context behind the incident. Sometimes in the midst of an election campaign one gets angry and upset.
It is unfortunate. Virbhadra Singh is a senior leader.
Sometimes, in the midst of election campaign, such things happen under mental or physical pressure,” Mr. Dikshit said.
Mr. Singh had threatened to break cameras of mediapersons in Kullu district last evening when some of them had sought his reaction to the fresh charges levelled against him by BJP.

Salman Khurshid threatened to kill Kejriwal, and later, explained that he was ‘misquoted’. Virbhadra Singh threatened media-men to break their cameras, and later, apologized. Even the Congress party did not accept the minister and the former minister on face values and expressed its displeasure over them and apologized to the people. The words of threat from Khurshid and Virbhadra and other VIPs are indicative of the growth of an undemocratic mindset and egoism in them in conjunction with that of their power of authority. Khurshid comparing himself to an ‘elephant’ and Kejriwal, a co-citizen, to an ‘ant’, is no different mindset, for, it is in the basics of democracy that all citizens are equal. A greater tragedy is that the words of threat emanated when the so-called ‘leaders’ were charged with corruption. Congress should not stop with formal apology, but should show such people the door to exit.
