The world-famous annual fair began at Pushkar town near Ajmer from October 31.
Its is a week-long festival organised by Department of Tourism and Pushkar Mela Vikas Samiti.
The festival is a break for the villagers for merriment.
The festival consists of number of events which include competitions and rural sports, camel decorations and horse dance performances along with cattle exhibitons.
One of the highlights of the festival is arts and crafts bazaar.
This is one of the oldest and largest camel fairs in the world.
The festival happens on the sand dunes with the tents set up for the traders.

As per the Hindu calendar, the festival takes place in the month of Kartika beginning of 'ashtami' the eighth day of the lunar calendar and it continues till 'Poornima'( full moon).
