Jolted by the alleged dubious dealings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) set in motion a clean-up act here on Monday by appointing vice-president (West Zone) Chirayu Amin as interim chairman of the IPL. Lalit Modi ceased to hold all positions (chairman, IPL and Champions League T20 and vice-president, BCCI) after the BCCI served a show-cause under BCCI Rules and Regulations 32 (iv) and suspended him under Rule 32 (vi) at the conclusion of the DLF-IPL III final at the D. Y. Patil Sports Stadium here on Sunday.
The IPL Governing Council, which met at an Emergent Meeting at the Cricket Centre here, also gave additional work to Ratnakar Shetty, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), BCCI, to examine the IPL records. Eleven of the 13 members of the GC attended the meeting. Farooq Abdullah did not attend the meeting because he was busy with Parliament session and Mohinder Pandove (Treasurer and Ex-officio member GC) was ill. BCCI president Shashank Manohar chaired the meeting.
Mr. Manohar, who has been in the city for the last four days, said that the events of the last few days have thrown up a lot of sad and unfortunate developments. “While we rejoice and celebrate the great success of IPL Season 3, the alleged acts of individual misdemeanours of Mr. Lalit K. Modi, chairman IPL and vice-president, BCCI, have brought a bad name to the administration of cricket and the game itself. Many IPL documents are missing from the office of the IPL and the BCCI. Everyday the Income Tax department is asking for the documents that we don't have in our custody. Therefore, we have asked Prof. Shetty to look into all these aspects and we've taken a further decision to go ahead with regard to the tournament for the year 2011.”
