In its first reaction to Friday's election results, the Chinese government said it was ready to work with the new government in New Delhi to take ties with India "to a new height".
"This year is a year of China-India friendly exchanges and bilateral relations are faced with new development opportunities," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told reporters in response to a question about Friday's poll results.
"Maintaining close and friendly relations is in the interest of the Chinese and Indian peoples and is also conducive to regional and world peace and stability," she said.
"China is willing to make joint efforts with the new Indian government, maintain a high level of exchanges, deepen exchanges and cooperation in all areas and bring the China-India strategic partnership to a new height."
Chinese analysts here said the scale of the victory of the Narendra Modi-led BJP could give a platform to boost India-China ties.
Lan Jianxue, a strategic expert at the China Institute of International Studies, said "business-friendly" Mr. Modi could openthe door to Chinese investments and upgrade the currently skewed trade relationship between the two countries.
