Centre’s offer on mobile tower norms

November 18, 2014 01:16 am | Updated 01:16 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday said his Ministry is open to making “corrective” measures in the mobile tower radiation norms; however, these should be based on objective material.

Speaking at the second international conference on ‘Health and safety aspects of mobile telecommunications’, the Minister said there is a need to have adequate information in the public domain on health and safety-related issues of mobile telephony.

“The first issue required to be addressed is that we must have adequate information in the public domain as to what the issue is about this whole radiation emission, whether it is good or bad for health,” he said.

Strict guidelines

He added strict guidelines, including hefty penalties, are in place and the Department of Telecom follows the standards therein. “I wish to make it very clear that if some more issues come in the public domain which requires certain more corrective measures, I am quite open for that,” Mr. Prasad said.
