Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said the Centre would make all efforts for improving India’s medical infrastructure and making medical facilities more integrated and affordable. “Our government is working towards providing healthcare and health cover to the people,” Mr. Singh said while speaking at the convocation of the King George’s Medical University (KGMU).
Stressing the need for developing an integrated healthcare system, Mr. Singh said: “Our government is committed to improve the medical infrastructure... We need to improve the primary healthcare system, which will reduce the pressure on super-speciality hospitals.”
Lauding the role of KGMU in providing excellent medical services to the people of Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Rajnath said: “The government will ensure that maximum facilities are available in the country. It may take five to 10 years, but people across the world will realise that they can get the best facilities in India.”
Noting that the proposal to 12 new medical colleges and four AIIMS was insufficient for a country like India, he said if national average was taken into consideration, medical facilities are not adequate. “If primary health centres are strengthened then burden of major institutes will reduce greatly,” he said.
Mr. Singh also pointed out that the Centre was committed to promoting alternative medicine and has set up a separate AYUSH Ministry.
