‘It is only meant to give a clean chit to PM'
Members of Team Anna on Friday rejected the idea of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) looking into the matter of coal bloc allocations to private parties when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was in charge of the Coal Ministry, saying “it is eyewash.”
“The agency is under the government. Can you really expect it to investigate the Prime Minister? We already know the outcome. It is only meant to give a clean chit to him,'' Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal said at a press conference here.
Even as the CBI initiated a preliminary probe, the BJP on Friday took credit for the Central Vigilance Commission referring the matter to the agency, saying it was on the basis of a complaint filed by their MP Hansraj Ahir. The MP, who had been pursuing the matter since 2010, sought a “special audit” of coal mining in the country.
Earlier this week, Team Anna had sought an independent probe by a panel of retired judges into charges against the Prime Minister and 14 Cabinet Ministers. A leaked CAG draft report pointed to a loss of an estimated Rs. 1,80,000 crore in the allotment of coal blocs during 2006-09 which formed the basis of Team Anna's charge against Dr. Singh.
Alleging that the CBI was a “complete puppet” in the hands of the government, Mr. Kejriwal said disproportionate assets case had been made against leaders of several political parties without any worthwhile investigations because they could be “helpful” to the government, but Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is a political foe of the ruling UPA, had been arrested in a very short period.
Asked why the Team did not approach the Supreme Court in the matter, he said courts could only adjudicate. “They cannot investigate.”

Let today's Congress leaders sit up,close their eyes and reflect
over where the country is heading. They will see the Mahatma in
Rajghat turning in his grave and rolling over a hundred thousand
times shedding tears of blood seeing what his chelas (it is a
different matter that the present day Congressmen hardly fill the
bill)are doing to the country indulging in scam after scam to
enrich themselves at the cost of crores of daridra narayans.Had
the Bapu lived today he would have unhesitatingly handed the
country back to the British on a platter seeing that their
exploitation of India was nowhere near the monstrous indigenous
one.Even as we are grappling with the never ending congress
choreographed scams comes the tamasha of Rashtrapati election. One
sits with fingers crossed with bated breath not knowing which
pliable person the Congress will manage to anoint to continue with
its scam rule.
Coal or this or that scam stares us in the face when we open the papers.Positive news has become a rare commodity.Way back in the 60s Rail Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri resigned on moral grounds following train accident in Ariyalur (TN) in which thousands died.Earlier Union Minister TTK resigned on similar moral grounds.Much earlier Chintaman Deshmukh quit over differences with Pandit Nehru. These honest patriotic men cherished moral values and acted without remaining glued to the chair. For them power was a tool for public service and never for personal aggrandizement.Today the moral degeneration is conspicuous and complete.Demand for enquiry, investigation, resignation what make news daily.Every wrong doer thinks he is honest and perfect.Shall we lay the blame at the door of the gullible voter for not electing the right persons?
whether we like it or not,it is a bitter truth that CBI as of today is under government control and to expect CBI to carry out independent and impartial investigation of this matter is a bit too much. Even the former directors of CBI (such as joginder singh)categorically say that the institution needs greater freedom. This fact has also become evident in the way CBI has investigated disproportionate asset case against (Mayawati ,Mulayam Singh Yadav and Jagan Mohan Reddy,) Adarsh Scam etc. Even the high court and Supreme court have questioned CBI effectiveness and impartiality in these cases a number of times.
So no logical person can expect CBI to probe this massive scam impartially. 1.80 lac is a very significant amount, capable of alleviating the sufferings of millions of poors if used constructively.
country needs an independent probe of this serious matter. Team Anna has done a Commendable job by highlighting this concern of millions of indians. Their DEMAND IS JUSTIFIED.
It is a bunch of incompetence.CBI has to do something serious, just not show off...they should crack the political links, the root cause of many scams by coming out of clutches of Sonia and congress including Prime Minister.
This will help in reducing other frauds and scams in India. Try to resolve the Root Cause (Politicians & Bureaucrats involved) and not show off by targetting or working on Symptom.
Over the years the CBI has earned the dubious distinction of being the "Home" maid and this being the widely held view it will not conduct a fair investigation.A servant cannot be expected to go against his boss.Howsoever hailed by the interested parties that the CBI is independent, there are no takers for it.Occasions are not wanting when the Courts had come down heavily on the CBI.In the circumstances it is not too much to demand investigation by a judge appointed by the Supreme Court considering that loss computed by the CAG in the coal scam far exceeds that in 2G.
It is quite surprising to come across few comments that condemn team Anna and are satisfied with CBI taking probe against its own masters. CBI is merely puppet in the hands of Government and some people really have to charge up their batteries to realize this. The case against Jagan Reddy, no case against Sheela Dixit, Chidambaram and exonerating Quatrochi simply prove this beyond doubt. The very fact that CBI has not even considered PMO office as party to coal scam, rock solid this very fact. Either people should realize this or should not worry about country being ruined.
It is shame that Both NDA and UPA have joined hands to destroy economy of country doing corruption in coal allocation. Both are Manuwadi old corrupt parties. Gadkari was also noted by Anna for his corruption when he was minister in Maharashtra. Native people will have to go immediately for Native People's Party to save this country from Coal Eaters Gadkari and Manmohan.
Annas team is 100% correct to identify the failure of CBI.Most of these officers are either IPS or some other cadre. They cannot be believed to investigate against their master. Manmohan Singh is also from Indian finance cadre and worked with Narashima Rao against whom lot of cases remain undetected. We want Hindu to expose these people who exploit us and made disproportionate wealth.
It was sarcastically said that CBI meant Congress Bureau of
Investigation. If it is hurting to it to be so called we can rechristen
it as GBI to mean Government Bureau of Investigation.CBI as structured
now is the servant of Government howsoever its independence is hailed.
Times without number the Institution had come under fire at the hands
of right thinking common people.A servant cannot adversely speak
against his boss and peacefully survive. As boss he can bend his servant
as he wants.Every act of the government has become suspect in the eyes
of the people and CBI investigation in the coalgate will be accused
acting as judge.
It was sarcastically said that CBI meant Congress Bureau of
Investigation. If the institution is hurt at this sarcasm it can be
rechristened as GBI to mean Government Bureau of Investigation.Times
without number the body had come under fire.It does not need a genius
to understand that a servant cannot adversely speak against his boss
and peacefully survive. It is not impossible for the boss to bend and
twist his servant.Everything done by this inept government has become
suspect in the eyes of right thinking common men. This naturally drives
Anna to highlight what otherwise would be swept under the carpet.CBI as
it is structured now is nothing but accused becoming judge.
Adopting a holier than though attitude will make them fall flat on their faces as they rich deserve for their arrogance in thinking that only they are the spokespersons of india uncorrupted inc!
The biggest generation of black money comes from two sources of corruption - the value of land and building. Every indian whether owning property or not knows that this is grossly undervalued to avoid paying actual registration and stamp duty or having lower assessed property taxes.
The other is organisations fronted by the Kejiriwals and Bedis and Bhushans whom many have challenged in the past as having some kind of quid pro quo for subverting and destroying democracy in india and questioning constitutional institutions in india and all the while collecting donations without accounting in the name of India Against Corruption without accounting for them - no names disclosed - hence money laundering and treason is a charge they should answer themselves first.
I think team Anna is right and I really support them. We really need independent body to point finger at Government. How can the CBI who is under the government can act against the will of government ? How can the CBI who is under P.Chidabram can accuse him ? Any CBI officer who dares to prove that our PM is guilty, next moment he or she will be court martialed. If CBI can really be trusted, then we would have the list of all the corrupt leaders and have them punished. I am against the notion that our country does not have corrupt leaders/politician. CBI is very efficient in nabbing business man/non political person but when the matter comes to catch politician they become lethargic. Laloo/Mayawati/ Karunanidhi to name a few known for their evil mind/corruption are still roaming free with impunity. If politician are not corrupt then how can they have property worth hundred crores by just earning a monthly salary of Rs 800000/ 100000.
Wish Team Anna would come up with new allegations. Pulling the wool over the eyes of the population has been the hallmark of Congress Governemnt (Bofors/2G/Coal to name a few) ably assisted by its lackeys in CBI.
The comments made by many above shows that Corrupt congress is perfecting its neafarious and sinister game. Aftet its paid rallies it has started paid comments. whole of India and especially Indian youth is waking up to loot, murder and rape of India on same lines as of British. After murder of 25 RTI activists furthur murders of patriots will now breed mutiny that will reach body guards of politicians. Forget just middle class whole of India is guided by truth and will not tolerate corrupt anymore.
CBI investigating its own top boss! Does that sound right to you all? Is there any conflict of interest? If there is even the slightest conflict of interest, then the PM should resign and have himself put under scrutiny to clear his name or if the Govt as a whole has nothing to hide then appoint the three member independent judges to investigate the PM. The quantum of corruption at the highest levels is going through the roof, the people of India cannot wait for the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections to teach a good lesson. At this rate the gap between the haves and the have-nots will widen so much, that have-nots are going to dictate the outcomes of lok-sabha elections. Education of the masses is very important to make them understand that corruption by a elected goverment is bad for the public at large. As long as you keep the masses uneducated and keep giving them grinders and TV's and gold thaali etc, India can never get their freedom from corruption. Start counting, 2G, CWG and Coal etc.OMG
Instead of letting the C.B.I to probe the matter concerning the P.M, it can pretty well be entrusted with a team of ministers of the P.M's choice too will serve as well the purpose & there by sparing the C.B.I from embarrassment. If the P.M & him team are sincere in their effort & really wanted to see an impartial probe, such a sensitive mater should be handed over to a panel of retired judges of supreme with impeccable records, If only the P.M wants to clear himself.
Their demand for an independent inquiry must be gladly accepted by the
Government, rather P.M. must come forward and should set up an inquiry to investigate the charges leveled against him and establish his credibility . If he and other ministers are found innocent it will shake the confidence of the people in Team Anna who according to the various spokesmen of the Govt. are leveling baseless charges and creating chaos and confusions amongst the countrymen. If Govt. proves to be correct in two/three such accusation nobody in the country will have faith in Team Anna.I feel this is an opportunity in the hand of the Govt.to lay down the Team Anna provided it should have confidence in the truth and fairness of it's decision.
@Abhishek Iyer:
Corruption is the main demon in our country. If that is taken care of, the other things
will automatically be sorted out to some extend. And it will be easier to handle other
causes with everyone being honest including the CBI and the Police.
So, my friend, I request you to come out and support Team Anna openly and spread
the word.
I believe Team Anna is right on track. When straight things don't
work, you will have to go around and take criticism.
They might be proved wrong but we will have to look at their
intention. By leveling charges again PM, they are pointing your
perceptions on the so called premier investigating agency CBI. We can
surely give some credit to CBI but we cannot ignore the fact that this
country cannot provide its citizens with a fair due justice when it is
politicized. You either take the injustice or protest it. You can
either question now or wait for another decade for an opportunity.
FBI is relevant, important and respected in US because it is
independent. FBI reports to Congress and remains apolitical. In UK
too, their investigative agency reports to Parliament.
Citizens should lay their faith on their Constitution and the
institutions that preserve its values more than to hope for an
individual or party to protect and preserve their virtues and values
Great job Team Anna!
Reading all the comments above that go against team Anna, I feel Congress has a big
call centre just to enter all the negative comments. CONGRESS - What a spoilt sport!
Looks like these people are getting funded by foreign bodies to work against india and govt agencies.
More than the "guilty" PM and even more than the supposed loss of billions, what's worrying is the Nautanki that goes on orchestrated by Team Anna and widely given coverage by the Media.
What's the guarantee that Kejriwal and Bedi are not going to take up Media as their next target?
Be wise-stop giving undue coverage and publicity to Team Anna and Ramdev.
It's surprising the public collective memory is so short they have forgotten----
Bedi charging for expenses not incurred.
Ramdev ending a stage managed fast, awkwardly.
Team Anna looking clumsy when only a few 100s present for
an event programmed as the "turning point" for the Nation.
Bhushan stirring the Kashmir bees' hive.
How come such a huge Nation has to depend on a bunch of clowns for upgrading values.
No doubt the Nation still loves Anna for raising a very relevant issue; but, it's high time he sought a better counsel more politically savvy than the present crowd.
I believe our prime minister is honest. But i feel he must answer the questions raised and come out clean.
we all know the result to which the CBI will arrive at,then what's the point of such an investigation, only god knows
There was an intense debate on the "Lokpal Bill" in Parliament, with major
opposition parties, as also Team Anna, demanding that PM to come under the
ambit of "Lokpal" and CBI to be brought out of the government's control and the
government vehemently opposing it. Now,the "coalgate" has come as a god sent
"live test case" to determine the necessity or otherwise of these demands. It may
be worth noting that the honorable PM,by saying he would quit public life if
corruption allegations are proved against him,had implicitly agreed for the probe,
though later on Congress Party rejected it,telling Team Anna to take legal course
of action. It remains to be seen as to how far and what extent CBI is able to probe
the matter independently, without any fear or interference from any quarter while
being under government control. Past history shows, without a nod from the govt,
CBI has not initiated any probe not only against allies, but against potential allies
as well.
We have/had a great regard for Team Anna for being on People's side and fighting against corruption. I was for Team Anna who fought on my behalf. As a office-going person and living abroad, I could only voice infront of the embassy or 'like' in facebook.
Lately, the means of fight against corruption does not seem to be in the right path. Firstly, fasting is not the only way to solve an issue. Secondly, using the words "threatening the government", "politicians" is inappropriate. Lastly and importantly, the latest salvo of accusing the PM without substantial evidence. The PM and ministers may be corrupt and Team Anna can complain. But use the RTI to collect information and provide evidence. If the Team Anna, that I thought will be my hero, throw hollow tantrums, I am saddened that my only friend is going on the wrong path and may be unsuccessful in its holy mission.
First, they come up with accusations which they don't have a right to
make...they undermine the constitution and act like a parallel
government, and now they want to tell the government how to go about
with the investigations. Might as well start writing an alternate
version of the constitution to suit them. Why can't they realise that
corruption, albeit an important issue, is not the only one today! Why
can't they fight for other causes such as caste, gender, maoists,
north east, etc. Damn, I forgot. The urban middle class doesn't give a
damn about it.
I heard the justification Mr. Kejriwal was projecting against CBI enquiring into a matter where PM is involved. Ofcourse it is Democracy in India, according to the Constitution. But every Indian who has been following the politics and Governmental practices for few decades, will know very well that it is not possible and practicable for the CBI to give an adverse report againt PM even if it is convinced otherwise. Even it is unimaginable in India to give an adverse comments against any other Minister or Sr. Govt. Officers. Look at the case of Lalu Prasad, Mulayam and Mayawati how CBI is investigated. CBI is not an independent investigating agency and at any cost is unsuitable to investingate into a matter where PM or even a Cabit net Minister is involved. Forget about it.
Are people of this country so foolish as to believe that an investigating agency under the
government will be able to make a credible enquiry in a case against the Prime Minister? A
proper enquiry by a court - appointed independent agency might clear the PM' s name and
if that happens the peoplie will believe the finding. However if the CBI does that, the, opposite
might happen.
The CBI functions under the Home Minister. The Prime Minister has some time ago expressed his view that he has full confidence in the Home Minister who was alleged to have indulged in corrupt practices to protect his son in the Aircell-Maxis case.Since the CBI is thus functioning under the direct control of the ruling party, any one can imagine what will be the outcome of such enquiries it will in the allegations against the Prime Minister.
Even though I am no longer a big fan of Anna Hazare, his team’s position on Prime minister is correct. Prime minister must face investigation to clear his name (remember the legacy of Sri. Ram). CBI investigation is meaningless. This may mean the beginning of the end for Congress, which is disheartening, but that is the doing of the present Congress leadership itself. The present Congress leadership is incompetent and the UPA administration corrupt to the core.
It is not too late for Congress to act. I wish young Mr. Gandhi has the wisdom of his grand mother to grab the opportunity. What he needs to do is to breakaway from the current corrupt institutional Congress leaders and bring in the youth wave. This can easily be done by endorsing the anti-corruption feeling prevailing in the country. It is good for the country and the party.
This anna team believes that they are the only good 4/5 people in the country. It is highly objectionable that they do character assassination of every institutions in the country. It will be disastrous and society must realise their designs as the country is being pushed into chaos and uncertainities with this type of posture and campaign.
Team Anna should not get paranoid and must think rationally and use some common
sense.CBI may be under the government as all other institutions are but they also
have their own identity and they should have some faith and wait till CBI
investigation is complete. If they jump the gun they will loose their own
credibility. They should not forget that CAG is also under government control
Anna Hazare and his team should be asked to investigate the corruption
charge they had put again the honorable PM and not the CBI as CBI is
under the PM.They talk non-sense most of time,In India, CBI can do
investigation and not the FBI or Team Anna.Being skeptical is good but
not to the extent that you lose your confidence in agencies like CBI
and the law of the land.Anna Hazare and his team should not tarnish
the image of an honest and decent man. There are so many except him who
are happily doing well with their corrupt practices, but raising those
issues will not put Anna Hazare and his team into media coverage.
what type of people are they team anna. they doubt every indian
institution and no one can satisfy their doubts. for their type of india
they should form some political party and seek support of all indian
citizens and if they get support india may change as per their dreams.
till then do not pay heed to their doubts as their doubts are only
spreading confusion and nothing else. by making ruling government so
helpless is also an act against nation.
These are serious allegations levelled by Team Anna on prime minister. They also produced some documents in this regards and if something is found irregular in these documents then govenment should take this on priority. The second this I would like to mention here that team anna have created an environment in the country against corruption they should come in politics and try to bring educated and talented people in parliament so that other more important issue should be sorted out in good manner.
Looks more like it's the Prime Minister who has been reckless with India's natural resources.
oh ... why are you making these false allegations a big news ? Think
strategically people. Who read these kind of news daily will
eventually end up loosing their faith in our country and our country
will one day tear apart. Probably Bhushan's want that. Hindu as a
decent publication dont support this, just think for a moment now, if
you keep on blaming honest people, who from future generation will
come to politics (probably only thieves or sponsored candidates will
dare to come to politics) and how they will be able to take brave
decisions to take our country forward ???
