The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to the CBI’s request for three weeks’ time to take charge of 212 cases identified to have links with the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh.
A Bench led by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu asked Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi to ensure that the CBI gets enough personnel to assist in the probe.
The CBI assured the court that it would engage special prosecutors, until the State prosecutors are able to appear in court so that the momentum is not lost.
The agency said that 212 Vyapam cases had been identified, of which 119 were awaiting probe.
Significantly, the CBI had foreseen that take-over of the cases would consume time and had in a July 16 hearing asked the Supreme Court to allow the State’s Special Task Force to continue filing charge sheets in cases where the investigation was over. If not, non-filing of charge sheets would have left the door open for accused persons to seek bail on technical grounds.
