April 03, 2016 02:44 am | Updated 02:44 am IST - AHMEDABAD:

A CBI court in Ahmedabad on Saturday relaxed the bail condition of ex-IPS officer D.G. Vanzara, a key accused in the two fake encounter cases: Sohabuddin Sheikh and Ishrat Jahan, in Gujarat, by allowing him to enter Gujarat.

These two fake encounters involved alleged killings of seven persons and the accused are cops of Gujarat, Rajasthan and officials of the country's premier spy agency Intelligence Bureau (IB).

The Ishrat ahan encounter was carried out by the Ahmedabad crime branch in June 2004 when Mr. Vanzara was the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) crime branch, while the Sohrabuddin and the Tulsiram Prajapati encounters were carried out in 2005 and 2007 respectively during Mr. Vanzara’s stint in the Gujarat Anti- Terrorist Squad (ATS).

Earlier, while granting bail to Mr. Vanzara, the court had restrained him from entering Gujarat.

On Saturday, CBI court judge S.J. Raje pronounced order allowing the accused retired police officer’s plea seeking modification in the bail order so that he can return his home State Gujarat.

His family members present in the court welcomed the court's order and said that “Mr. Vanzara would be returning home after nine years and there will be celebrations.”

He was arrested by the Gujarat police in 2007 and was shifted to the Mumbai Arthur road jail after the apex court transferred the trial of the Sohrabuddin case to Mumbai.
