Central Bureau of Investigation Director Ranjit Sinha has sought evidence, if any, from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman against former CBI officials on their suspected links with a meat exporter who is under the scanner for alleged tax evasion.
The query follows media reports suggesting that the former CBI Director A.P. Singh, who is now a member of the Union Public Service Commission, had links with a meat exporter, Moin Akhtar Qureshi.
According to reports, the Income Tax Department had launched a probe into the financial dealings of Qureshi several months ago and in that process, tapped his phone conversations.
For his part, the former CBI chief has clarified to the media that Qureshi is his personal friend.
According to a senior officer, Mr. Sinha has taken cognisance of media reports and written to the CBDT Chairman.
“If at all we come across evidence suggesting any link of incriminating nature, we will initiate action against guilty officers as per law,” said the officer.
