The lock of the central office of the Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, was found broken on Friday evening and documents were found scattered around, raising fresh concerns over security in the university.

The Nobel Prize medallion of Rabindranath Tagore was stolen from a museum in the same complex in 2004, and never found again.

Birbhum Superintendent of Police Murlidhar said the university filed a complaint on Saturday at the Bolpur police station regarding the burglary.

The University Registrar, Manimukut Mitra, told journalists that “ nothing has happened. Let the inquiry be completed and then we will get back to you.”
