Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee vowed on Sunday that the next Left Front government in the State would be an “even better” one.
Addressing election meetings in Jadavpur, from where he is seeking re-election, Mr. Bhattacharjee said: “We [the Left Front] take this pledge on the strength of our experience in government. We have worked and learnt from our mistakes and because of this we will be able to set up an even better government [after the coming Assembly elections].”
The poll outcome in the State will have an impact across the country, he added.
The Chief Minister said that while consolidating the successes in the agricultural sector there was a need for setting up more industries to provide greater employment.
More job opportunities
“This is the big question for the next government; how we can set up more industries — particularly in the small and medium sectors — which can provide more job opportunities,” he said.
He termed the performance of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee as Railway Minister as ‘inept' and ‘whimsical.'
Citing some of the Ministry's projects which envisage the setting up of factories, Mr. Bhattacharjee said the proposed units would not come up as there was no proper planning. There was talk of a freight corridor but little had come out of it.
“The proposed factory at Dankuni [in the State's Hooghly district] will not come up. Neither will those planned for Sankrail [in Howrah] or New Jalpaiguri [in Jalpaiguri district]. There is no planning, there is no money. As a result no work is being done,” he said.
Despite being widely advertised the new tracks proposed by the Ministry are yet to be laid. “It appears that its only function is the naming of railway stations. Can the Railways be run this way?” Mr. Bhattacharjee asked.
