A Chetak helicopter of the Army crashed in Nashik on Wednesday morning, killing both the pilot and the co-pilot.

Nashik Commissioner of Police Nikhil Gupta told The Hindu that the chopper crashlanded in a civilian locality nearly half a kilometre from the Army Aviation Training School at Gandhinagar within minutes of taking off from there around 8. 45 a.m. According to police, the chopper crashed in a shed near a house at Jaachak Nagar. Army sources said the chopper was on a routine sortie. “The reason for the crash is yet to be ascertained,” Captain Nambiar, PRO, Defence, told The Hindu. “There was no fire. No civilians were injured. Both Major Atul Garjain and Major Bhanu Chader died on the spot,” said Collector P. Velrasu.

“The chopper had come here [Nashik] yesterday night [Tuesday] from Jodhpur. The incident took place when the defence officers were heading back,” he said.
