The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken up the issue of Hindu and Sikh families which have been forced to settle in the State after being driven out of Pakistan.

According to a party release, the State unit set up a three-member committee under the chairmanship of Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna to look into all aspects of the issue, including relief for such families who have taken shelter in the Punjab.

It would seek adequate security for the life and property of Hindus and Sikhs settled abroad.

The other members of the committee include senior party leaders Niruttam Dev Ratti and Baldev Chawla.

The committee will examine the extent of the problem and suggest remedial as well as relief measures.

Mr. Khanna said Hindus and Sikhs were hounded out of Pakistan.

They had to run for their lives, leaving their property and businesses behind.

He said most of the families driven out of Pakistan have settled down in Rajpura, Amritsar and Jalandhar.

The committee has proposed a meeting in Chandigarh with the district presidents of the BJP and MLAs from the three districts on June 29 to take stock of the situation.
