The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh citing criticism of his performance by the Time magazine, saying he had only sent a message of “disillusionment, corruption and a leaderless economy”.
Dr. Singh has been dubbed as an “underachiever” by the US magazine which says he appears “unwilling to stick his neck out” on reforms that will put the country back on the growth path.
“Definitely, he is not an achiever.... All that he has achieved is corruption, scam and bad governance.... He is an honest Prime Minister of the most corrupt government,” BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters in New Delhi while referring to the magazine report.
BJP leader Tarun Vijay said the same U.S. magazine had lauded the performance of its Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
“There is a sharp contrast between the two Indians who had been featured on Time magazine. While a story on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was that he meant business and gave a message of prosperity, security, infrastructure development and progress for the country, specially for people of Gujarat, the other Indian who has been featured is giving a message of despair, disillusionment, corruption, leaderless economy and downslide of Indian rupee,” he said.
Cong counters remarks
The Congress countered the criticism saying in the past eight years the UPA government headed by Dr. Singh has provided political stability, social harmony, internal cohesion, economic growth and a greater role in global affairs.
“This by no stretch of imagination is under achievement,” party spokesperson Manish Tewari said.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad also came out in defence of the government saying the TIME report must have been “dictated” by Team Anna.
“People like Anna Hazare and Kejriwal had given dictation to the American magazine,” he said.
Praising the government, Mr. Lalu said UPA projects are doing well and asked, “What will America say as their own economy is shattered?”
Team Anna member Manish Sisodia said the “government of the day needs to be set responsible for all these things. When Manmohan Singh took over he was supposed to be an honest person. He was supposed to deliver, which he has totally failed to deliver. Everyday a new case of corruption comes up.”

TIME magazine says that some believe Dr.Singh's unofficial power-sharing agreement with the UPA chairperson has tied his hands. We do not know its veracity. The facts as we know are A.Raja defied PM's advice to go in for auctioning 2G.In the face of it the PM could neither make the Tele.Minister to fall in line nor did he (PM) quit himself when he saw his writ did not run. He remained a silent spectator. TIME or no TIME facts are there for all to see and draw conclusions.Personal integrity and honesty are no substitute for action against an erring Minister especially when colossal loss to exchequer loomed large.
People should not think that those criticizing the BJP are intolerant
or blind followers of the Congress. Its apparent from the Congress'
fielding of the foolishly sarcastic, misinformed, misguided and
generally atrociously buffoonish Lalu as their defender that they lack
a sensible and sustainable defense to the report. However one thing is
clear; the Congress is a disciplined party rank and file. Remember
after the Uttarakhand victory the Congress faced a revolt in the state
unit. That was put down within a day or two. Whereas the BJP govt in
Karnataka has been reduced to a pathetic melodrama where the BJP uses
big words like "central leadership" and "high command" while
surrendering to tainted ex-CM Yeddy. The BJP leadership is almost
barren of a graceful but tough leader. They can't unify the
Opposition. They can't even keep their flock together. Their ground
situation in terms of leaders and workers is not very different from
the Congress. Thus they need to improve drastically.
Times criticism of Dr Manmohan Singh is aimed to open up Indian economy to foreign
corporates. If we had managed to let the FDI's in, and allow them to take more and
more of indian wealth out of the country Dr Manmohan Singh would have appeared
beautiful and dynamic.
We know Dr Manmohan Singh as one who can't punch his weight. Being one of the
most honest politicians with an incredible record of two terms in office, heading a
coalition, he is now in a better position to understand the key to success in India.
Dr Manmohan Singh should lead the nation in eliminating corruption.
The Title on the cover page of the latest edition of the reputed "
TIME" Magazine is very apt. No one doubts the personal integrity of
the P.M . His hands are tied and he has very little say on any policy
matter. Atleast now the Central Govt should take necessary steps to
put the economy back on rails failing which the U.P.A Govt would be
routed out in the next election.
What a shame our country has been brought to by the Congress. Manmohan Singh should resign if he has any honesty in him as he has lead our country to crisis after the golden tenure by Shri A. B. Vajpayee.
Politics apart, the prime minister hold the responsibility for the
welfare of the people, just like the captain of a ship is, for those
on his ship. The buck stops with the PM's office - Period. Lalu Prasad
Yadav does not understand terms like "performance", "Freedom of the
press", "Duty" or "Responsibility". To him, governance is all about
power and in the real world, power comes with responsibility - pure
and simple.
India is a large economy, and the world is watching us, especially
because of the globalization we have witnessed. The TIME magazine has
independent contributors, who don't get their stories "dictated" by
Anna Hazare. As for those who want to pick holes in the BJP, it shows
that they can't brook healthy criticism. I can only feel sorry for
them.
Now a days congress and BJP are running the same shows in the country. Both party s are competing who can do more corruption.there is nothing to worry about TIME ASIA because nothing is in manmohan gi hand every thing in sonia ji hands.he is only there to sign on official documents........
BJP has become a time pass. As BJP dont have anything of value to add
they make big issue out of nothing. 1st, it was log-jam along with
Congress in Parliment, Lokpal bill, the great Indian tamasha on
President and now BJP wants to make headlines on PM performance that
too from a magazine............. what is BJP doing with Karnataka?
And after all these politician say..... pls respect us!
Shame on you!
It is funny to judge our PM performance by third country report. We Indians in fact act, think, and practice like slave. Why we should accept the report by Time Magazine, we should not be given importantce to them. Once we accept, they will interfere in all respect. BJP today are more happy, tomorrow they do not know, once they accept this means they have to accept furture also.
The party which has changed CM of Karnataka because of a great corruptionist are talking about PM of India. it's been ridiculous against their part. Dr.Singh can be a good PM and a great Indian if he do whatever he likes unless listen to his higher authority every time.
Why are we getting our knickers twisted on what Time's editors think? Are we still in the slasvish mindset that approval by the 'white sahib' is all we care for? Time or no Time, it is a fact that Dr Singh has failed in all fronts, thanks to his Cabinet colleagues who seems to be working for the opposition than for the Government. It is also a fact that Mr Modi has been ca lean leader with an one point of agenda 'Betterment of the People of Gujarat'. It is a fact that Mr Modi has been successful in his mission.
Now coming to BJP, they cannot call the kettle black on the back of the 'White Sahib' report card. Their latest 'Drama in Karnataka' proves that they are qually inept, ham-handed, corrupt and go by the principle 'power at all cost'.
Dr Singh could do without the support of Lallu. With his track record of amassing wealth for himself and for his family any support from him is likely to make matters worse.
What will America say as their own economy is shattered?
[Praising the government, Mr. Lalu said UPA projects are doing well and asked, “What will America say as their own economy is shattered?”]
You should get out more. Where in America can you find a toilet like Bihar? And the people who could fix it flee to America in thousands every day, precisely because the kleptocratic ruling class has made the country unlivable.
Since the mainstream Indian media, especially the electronic, has been solidly behind him and also since he is a safe seat warmer for the crown prince of the Congress party, Dr.Manmohan Singh has survived as a non-performing PM all these years. Ultimately it had to be the world famous Time Magazine to"call a spade a spade". Thank you, Time Magazine.
When, Lalu roped in to defend MMS, than we say there must be some truth to article and willing to look in to coming issues of Time ASIA, to see why they selected MMS on their front page.
who takes lalu seriously?
I strongly condemn the term "underacheiver" who acheived alot of things in his career as finance minister and as governor of RBI. Because of corrupt politician he was made into this underacheiver image. If he is allowed to take all the decision on his own without the interruption Ms.Sonia Gandhi and other corrupt leaders everyone can find the ability he has.
i am not shocked about the times report, but i cant inderstand why there is a opinion taken from lalu prasad yadav.an honourable and responsible media should never give importants to such persons.there are few more names like digvijay singh.they are the black spot in the indian democracy and politics.
they always talk nonsense things, they always do very cheap arguments on very critical issues.
so i think it is media's responsibility not adding such bothering person's opinions
Its high time the BJP do something positive that highlights the
"difference" it claims it will bring rather than jump at reports in
magazines. Anyone tracking the BJP's performance will say that while the
Congress lacks honesty, the BJP lacks discipline and courage and both
lack transparency.
Its strange that in India when media(esp media of other countries)are making comments on the democratic chief, instead of being united and giving them a hard reply, politicians are just following their(media's) words. Just looking for a chance to make comments taking the media words as some hard fact truth. I am sure they would have behaved if the statement was on any of their ministers.
Lalu Prasad Yadav alleges that Time's criticism of Manmohan Singh was dictated by Team Anna. The allegation makes no sense - he is talking through his hat.
MMS is squarely responsible for the devastating economy because of his
greed for power. He should have resigned long back had he had a least
sense of patriotism.
Manish, Lalu etc are either hate figures or jokers in Indian politics.
What the? An American magazine did some story to boost up their sales
and our beloved politicians are making a hue and cry over who is better.
No wonder Mr. Manmohan Singh can't concentrate on his job. feel sorry
for him.
It is a fact that Manmohan Singh, the prime minister, is an underachiever when compared Manmohan Singh, the finance minister. However, he is a overachiever too, He is third long served prime minister of the country next to Mrs Gandhi who was next oly to her father.
The accessment of Time Magazine is correct. but there is another hidden agenda behind of US that to project Narenda Modi. According to Indian situation, he is not fit since he doesn't know anything about India or Indian peoples background.
Joke of the millennium uttered by the greatest joker of the millennium that the article is
dictated by team Anna. Does he think Time magazine is so rotten to accept things said by
any Tom,Dick and Harry? Congress talks about stability! Any Corrupt Government can be
stable if supported in any coalition member parties who are all the main source of corruption-
read DMK, SP, BSP. Etc etc., I will be extremely happy if Time magazine can file a
defamation suit against these jokers, if there is a provision, and win.
Honestly What congress does not agree is very correct since the
intensity of his deeds not match rather very feeble the adjective used
for him "Underachiever" he is actually a Non-Functional PM with a motive
to protect the chair like Bharat in Sacred Ramayana Epic , kept the
Ayodhya 'Simhasan" waiting for Sri Ram Our Bhola babu MMS is waiting for
the prince to come of age and maturity.Hence, how can he perform to
achieve. So NON ACHIEVER may be apt word for MMS
How can you call a person honest who is shielding dishonest and
corrupt Ministers in his cabinet. Manmohan Singh is not
definitely honest as long as his PMO office have many skeletons
in their board
He has many scams in his credit such as 2 G and Coal corruption
dealing. The UPA II Govt has not only failed on the economy part
but also on the very Security of the country which the Times
magazine has to point out while describing the Prime Minster.
India is facing Terrorists attack every now and then whereas US
had not even one after the 9/11 incident in their country.
What else do you expect from Mr. Lalu Prasad? Manmohan Singh is protectng corrupt people like Mr. Lalu Prasad. He does not understand the difference between a Time magazine report and US government. I doubt whether he is thinking Time magazine is being run by US government? One more thing that we are observing is that Lalu always jokes on every issue whether be it of national importance or not. Is he thinking that people are enjoying his jokes. I hope he understands that people are looking him as a joker. I sincerly request the media not to seek his comments or publish his comments. People like Lalu should be sidelined by media so that he does not gain any importance.
Time Magazine is known for such articles....which has no footings.
Honest man is Honest man...no question about it
What can be done about Corruption when whole Lot is involved. He can allow cases to Court. Has never done anything to save Corrupted ones.
Democracy has drawbacks and one should accept that
cannot blame an individual in a democracy. the blame is on people. the
progress in the previous term is also same. people should have
reciprocated. also most of the people are careless about corruption.even
the leader for good cause anna hazare protest did not gain much support.
BJP should realise new ways of foreign forces to control the India's governance and should take care not to be a tool in their hands. Manmohan is accountable to Indian people, not some foreign magazine.
well..let's be fair, it is true, he could have done so much more.
who cares why he could/did not, fact is, he did not!
Don't believe Manish Tiwari who may say the next moment that without Congress the
world would not have existed as it is today. And when cornered would jump to say
that he was misquoted. After all see his lineage and people will understand how lies
and truth makes no distinction in his mouth.
Time's assessments are always far from the truth but in very rare cases they come to the right conclusion, like the one appeared in the latest edition!
But what has the BJP to boast about themselves. Look at the sloppy
way they handled the situation in Karnataka. Their own leaders have
taken up to corruption as a compensation for their achevements.
