Thousands of victims and survivors of the Bhopal gas tragedy held a demonstration here on Saturday to reiterate their demand for a fair compensation.
The demonstrators condemned the “opportunism displayed by various political parties” and submitted to Governor Rameshwar Thakur a petition addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
“It is sad that instead of paying attention to the plight of the victims, both the Central and State governments are playing a blame game,” said Abdul Jabbar of the Bhopal Gas Peedith Mahila Udyog Sangathan, which organised the meeting.
Curative petition
In the petition, the demonstrators demanded the filing of a curative petition against the Supreme Court's judgment of 1996, renewing efforts to extradite the former Chairman and CEO of Union Carbide,Warren Anderson, based on the July 2009 arrest warrant and the cleaning up of hazardous wastes from the Union Carbide factory site in Bhopal, among other things.
