Abhitej Sandhu, 27, grandnephew of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and Aam Aadmi Party leader, died on Sunday of injuries he suffered in an accident at Maglad, near Rampur tehsil, in Shimla district on Saturday night.

Sandhu’s bike skidded off the road when he was returning after trekking in the remote Kaza area in Lahaul-Spiti district. He was admitted with head and back injuries to a hospital in Rampur, 130 km from here.

Abhitej was the son of Abhay Sandhu, who quit the Punjab Peoples Party and joined the AAP, along with his son. He was campaigning for the AAP in Delhi, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

The body was taken to Mohali for cremation scheduled for Monday, his friends said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “May his soul rest in peace, heartfelt condolences to his family members.”
