Social activist Anna Hazare has threatened to go on a fast again on Ramlila Ground if the government does not call a special session of Parliament to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill.
In similar letters written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Law Minister Kapil Sibal and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the activist said the government had gone back on its assurances.
“Two years have passed and there has been no action on Jan Lokpal, Citizen’s Charter and appointing Lokayuktas in all States. These Bills are of utmost important in the fight against corruption but there has been no action despite assurance from the Prime Minister to me on August 27, 2011 to make me end my indefinite fast on Ramlila Ground then.”
Mr. Hazare said although the demand was that the Citizen’s Charter be a part of the Lokpal Bill, the government decided to pass it separately. “There was a discussion in both Houses of Parliament after which everybody agreed on three issues — Jan Lokpal Bill, Citizens Charter and appointing Lokayuktas in all States. Even after a delay of two years all the issues are still pending,” he wrote to Dr. Singh.
“There is a resolution passed in Parliament and the Prime Minister of the country promises us in writing and if these promises are not kept, then it is a subject of worry,” he said in the letter written on Saturday.
In a separate letter, Mr. Hazare referred to a communication sent to him by Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office V. Narayansamy and said the points raised in it were meant to “mislead people.”
