YSRC banking on traditional support base

May 15, 2014 11:23 pm | Updated 11:23 pm IST - NELLORE:

After the success in local body elections, the YSR Congress leaders here are expecting to repeat the electoral victories in the Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in Nellore district.

With the TDP set to give a keen contest in many segments, the YSRC leaders have started banking on their established support base especially the minorities and weaker sections. The party leaders are now making calculations based on the polling percentages in each segment.

Initially, the YSRC leaders were confident of winning all the 10 Assembly constituencies in the Nellore district, but the overall scenario has changed.

Now they are confident of victory in five to six constituencies, while it would be a tough contest in other segments. Even in the municipal elections, the YSRC and the TDP came close in most of the divisions and wards. Both parties won with very thin majorities of below 500 votes.

The Nellore district is considered as the second strongest district for the YSRC after Kadapa in terms of voter base and electoral success. The 2012 by-elections showed the unquestionable domination of the party, but that magical strength was missing in both civic and local bodies election results.

In the Nellore Municipal Corporation, the YSRC leaders drew plans to keep in check the fortunes of TDP candidates, but they managed to win in 17 divisions. The YSRC won 32 divisions, thus having comfortable majority to get its mayor elected. In the ZPTC elections, also the TDP candidates gave a tight contest to their YSRC counterparts.

With the rival party having good success in other parts of the State, the YSRC leaders are now anxiously waiting for the general election results for which the counting will be held on Friday.
