In a bizarre incident, a seven-year-old girl was raped by a degree student in Penchikalpet village in Atmakur mandal that came to light very late.

The incident occurred six days ago and the family members of the victim acted late and later the locals tried to sort out the matter through village elders through a ‘panchayati’.

However, the police came to know of the incident only on Sunday when the village elders refused to take initiative in the case. According to Kazipet ASP Koya Praveen, the accused, Kandikatla Prashanth, 23, was still at large.

The accused took the girl to a secluded place on the pretext of buying her some biscuits and abused her sexually. The girl took the matter to the notice of her grandmother as her mother was out of station at that time. But the grandmother did not take the issue seriously, thinking that the child might be playing some mischief. When the girl’s mother returned, she alerted the village elders and they went to the police to lodge a complaint. A case against the accused, Prashanth.
