The police have arrested Kaveti Alivelu of Adinarayanapuram in Chirala mandal of Prakasam district and recovered 65 tolas of stolen gold ornaments worth ₹16 lakh from her, Allagadda DSP Madhava Reddy said.
Posing as a passenger, she allegedly cut the handbags of bus passengers and stole gold ornaments, and was nabbed while moving about suspiciously near a gold shop at Nandikotkur, the DSP told the media in Srisailam.
Wanted in 11 cases
On her confession that she sold 10 tolas of gold ornaments to a Central Crime Station constable of Ongole, an inquiry has been initiated, Mr. Reddy said.
Kaveti Adinarayana, his wives Kaveti Alivelu, and Kaveti Varalakshmi, Sivaleela, Nagamma, Edukondalu and Karreddula Vamsi alias Nani allegedly formed a gang and stole gold ornaments from passengers in Chirala, Addanki and Ongole in Prakasam district, Atmakur and Nandikotkur in Kurnool district, Mydukur and Kadapa in Kurnool district and Venkatagiri in Nellore, he said. They were accused in 11 cases, including three cases in Atmakur police station and four in Nandikotkur police station. A special team kept vigil after a passenger Sivaratnamma complained that 44 tolas of gold was stolen from her handbag when she travelled from Kurnool to Nandikotkur last year.
