Police bust a thief gang in Prakasam, while athletic championship highlights the need of better sports infrastructure in Vijayawada

With Nellore Collector N. Srikanth being designated as Special Commissioner of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA), many bigwigs and their close followers, who have high stakes in government works, real estate and property disputes in the district are said to have breathed a sigh a relief.

For them, Mr. N. Srikanth apparently was a big hurdle. A few leaders allegedly had tried hard to ensure his transferIn his place, M. Janaki has been posted here. There are reports that her husband N. Yuvaraju, an IAS officer, is likely to be made the first Vice-Chairman of the proposed Nellore Urban Development Authority (NUDA).

Meanwhile, Nellore Municipal Corporation, known for controversies and scams in the past, for the first time has got an IAS officer Chakradhara Babu, who is said to be a task master. Now, this is said to have become a worry for property owners in the light of the demolition drive to facilitate road widening.

The Opposition leaders have started gaining public favour, saying that this was why they did not bring any IAS officer to the district during their tenure.

Robbers’ gang busted

The Prakasam police achieved a major breakthrough during the week, with the arrest of 22-year-old Karan Solanki, a key member of a thief gang from Pali district of Rajasthan, which had been targeting cellphone and jewellery shops in the district, besides other places in Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

They used to conduct a recce during daytime, break open locked shops during the night and decamp with cellphones and gold ornaments, explained Additional Superintendent of Police B. Rama Naik, who had sent a police team to Rajasthan to nab the other offenders involved in a series of robberies reported from the State.

Sports infrastructure needs revamp

The National Junior Athletic Championship in Vijayawada has brought the city under national focus. Many athletes from different States are participating in the event. However, it has exposed the need for better sports infrastructure in the city.

Reports say the government was pitching to host National Games and if that is to be achieved, the existing infrastructure has to be revamped Though, a few corporate companies are sponsoring different sporting events, the onus now lies on the government to initiate measures to promote sports in a big way.
