After targeting the Madina Educational Institutions and the Allauddin Trust, the Wakf Board has set its eyes on Hotel Marriott, the erstwhile Viceroy Hotel. It has decided to proceed against the star hotel on the ground that it is built on Wakf land.
“The Wakf Tribunal will be approached in this regard to issue eviction order,” said Shaikh Mohd Iqbal, special officer, Wakf Board. He told presspersons here on Monday that a show-cause notice was already issued to the hotel management in 2007 following an enquiry, which established that the land measuring two acres and two ‘guntas’ was Wakf property.
The land was donated for maintenance of Masjid-e-Khamooshan nearby. In its reply, the hotel management, however, maintained that it was not wakf land. “Action is pending in this case. Now we are approaching the Tribunal to get eviction orders,” Mr. Iqbal said, adding that nobody would be spared if Wakf property is encroached.
With regard to Madina institutions, the Income Tax Department would be asked to look into the funds of Madina Education Society since there were complaints of collection of huge donations. Cases were already booked under IPC and Wakf Act.
It was also proposed to initiate action under Prevention of Corruption Act since Mutawallis and members of wakf institutions were public servants under Section 101 of Wakf Act. “The High Court had upheld our action in taking over MES properties and ordered a committee of parents and teachers to run the administration,” he said.
