With a positive and vibrant atmosphere prevailing across the country, aspiring youngsters should work towards the making of a developed India, remarked Vice-President-elect M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating a slew of facilities at the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) here on Monday, Mr. Naidu said youngsters, who would eventually decide the course of a country and establish its future, should focus on the country’s development. He urged them to study well and excel in their fields alongside their contributions to society.

‘Fight against social evils’

“There is an immediate need for shunning destructive and obstructive mentalities and work in a constructive manner, with focus on financial equality, zero tolerance towards corruption or any form of discrimination: caste, creed, religion, region etc., no droughts or famines, ushering in the Rama Rajya,” he added, in his inimitable style.

Mr. Naidu also urged students (and people) to unite and strengthen the fight against poverty, illiteracy, corruption, black money, atrocities against women/caste etc., alongside building their confidence and individual contributions. He further expressed happiness as his first official programme after being elected as the Vice-President of India was linked to inaugurating medical/health services and extolled their importance via maxims ‘health is wealth’ and ‘service to man is service to god’.

He said that Raksha Bandhan was indicative of Indian culture and philosophy.

Mr. Naidu along with Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas lauded the efforts of SVIMS management for creating a name for themselves in the health sector.

The Institute of Cardiac Sciences was launched by Mr. Naidu and would work as a hub benefiting people in Rayalaseema and Nellore district.

SVIMS Director-cum-Vice-Chancellor Dr. T.S. Ravikumar said that the institute's launch would coincide with a week-long workshop with experts from Virginia Commonwealth University and remarked that they would focus on unveiling an international training centre by American Heart Association.

Hostel building

Other projects inaugurated by Mr. Naidu include SVIMS Sri Padmavati Medical College for Women (SPMCW) hostel building (₹18 crore with 288 student capacity) and seven building projects of SPMCW to the tune of ₹74.76 crore. Mr. Naidu also inaugurated the Indo-US National Electrophysiology Workshop, in commemoration of SVIMS silver jubilee year.

Later, at Sri Venkateswara Medical College (SVMC), Mr. Naidu inaugurated the Institute for Pregnant Women and distributed tablet PCs to first year medical students.
