Upbeat telecom district plans big

Stands first in the State in securing broadband connections in February

April 11, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - TIRUPATI:

The Tirupati Telecom District of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) stood first in entire Andhra Pradesh for the month of February 2016 in securing new broadband connections. The data usage is also so high, thanks to the presence of half a dozen universities, higher educational institutions, Wi-Fi hot spots, and public places.

The State-run telecom provider hence plans to expand its broadband network in a big way in the Tirupati Telecom District, which holds a lot of promise. Tirupati (Chittoor district) bagged around 700 new connections every month, which cumulatively added 7,600 connections between April 2015 and February 2016.

“This rise is attributed to the presence of higher educational institutions and the surge in pilgrims,” says General Manager M.S.A. Nuton.

After the 5G Wi-Fi hotspots installed at the central bus station and airport became a huge hit, with a whopping 50 GB utilised everyday by the travellers, the BSNL got down to installing more at Balaji Colony, Bairagipatteda, Bhavani Nagar, TUDA, Korlagunta, Tirupati main exchange, Padmavathipuram, Chandragiri, Srikalahasti, and Panagal Road (Srikalahasti), offering data services in a radius of 200m. Any smart phone holder can register and use the data for 15 minutes free of cost in a single day and three such sessions in a month, after which it can be used by making payment online, says Mr. Nuton.

Similarly, cell coverage will be improved atop the Tirumala hills, with four more towers being added to the existing nine cell sites.
