The Tirupati Urban Police booked two youngsters under the Nirbhaya Act here on Monday night, for injuring a girl with malicious intent. According to Alipiri police, the prime accused N. Naveen Kumar and his friend G. Yashwanth resorted to the act as the girl turned down the former’s proposal to be in a relationship. “The incident occurred on June 1, when the girl along with her friend, was returning to her residence in the K.B. Layout of Tirupati. The duo, in an inebriated condition, grievously injured the girl by ramming her two-wheeler with their bike,” said a senior police official.

Bed-ridden after injury

The attack left the girl with an injured spine, rendering her bed-ridden for the next six months, while her friend escaped with minor injuries. This has hampered Chandrika’s plans to pursue her graduation at NIFT Bengaluru, for which she was supposed to report on June 28. Even in the past, Naveen had been responsible for harassing the girl for the same reason, he said. The case was initially registered with the traffic police as an accident case and later transferred to the Alipiri police station, as the girl’s parents revealed mala fide intentions of the accused.

With no proper response, the parents approached Tirupati Urban SP R. Jayalakshmi, following which a case was registered on June 6.

Naveen, hailing from Kadapa district, had already surrendered to the police and Yashwanth was arrested by the police on Monday night.

A case was registered under Sections 354, 354 (d), 324, 506 and 509 of IPC and rowdy sheets have been opened against the accused, as per a press release by Ms. Jayalakshmi.
