Towards Telangana

The countdown has begun for the formation of Telangana, the 29th State of India. As the appointed day — June 2 — draws near, people in both Telangana and the successor State of Andhra Pradesh are feeling the pangs of partition.

Unlike the uneventful formation of States such as Chhattisgarh (Madhya Pradesh), Jharkhand (Bihar) and Uttarkhand (Uttar Pradesh), the monumental task of bifurcating Andhra Pradesh is not without its tensions and apprehensions. As the colossal effort of distributing assets, allotting employees, fixing ratio for sharing of power, water and taxes goes on, the people of both States indeed are looking forward to a smooth transition. In this backdrop, The Hindu brings to you a series of articles on the bifurcation issues from today.
