This, despite AP having more medical and dental seats. The statistics indicate that medical aspirants are more interested in T-EAMCET.

Students from Andhra Pradesh continue to evince keen interest in colleges in Telangana, more so in medical education. This, despite AP having a higher number of medical and dental colleges and seats.

A look at the applicants for Telangana-EAMCET reveals that medical aspirants from A.P. number much higher than those for engineering. Figures as on April 2 reveal that 27,000 students from AP had applied for T-EAMCET, of which more than 17,000 were from the medical stream.

Interestingly, 52,909 medical aspirants from the AP region applied for the last combined EAMCET in 2014. Similarly, last year 2.14 lakh candidates appeared for engineering exam of the combined EAMCET from AP region.

A similar number is expected this year too for AP-EAMCET but only 9,000 have preferred to write T-EAMCET this year. The number might go up a bit as the last date for applications is April 10.

The statistics indicate that medical aspirants are more interested in T-EAMCET. This is surprising given that AP has more medical colleges and seats compared to Telangana.

AP has 26 medical colleges, of which 14 are private and 12 in the government sector, with a total of 3,950 seats. It has 15 dental colleges with 1,350 seats. Telangana, with 15 private colleges and five government colleges, has 2,950 seats.

It has 12 dental colleges with 1,140 seats.

“Competition for medical seats is high given the few numbers and high donations in the management quota and in other States. So the positive response was expected,” says N.V. Ramana Rao, Convenor, T-EAMCET 2015.

However, engineering has received poor response in contrast to the expectation of colleges hoping to fill their seats. Officials feel those interested in coming to Hyderabad may opt for the management quota than the convenor quota.

“Since the fee for management and convenor quota seats (for engineering) is the same they would prefer to skip T-EAMCET,” explained an official.

Around 6,000 students from States other than AP and Telangana have also applied so far.
