Three policemen belonging to Bihar were among five persons who were killed after a truck hit their vehicles parked on the side of the National Highway 5 near Nellore on Sunday morning. Two others sustained serious injuries.
The accident occurred when the SUV of Patna policemen was stopped on the roadside following a flat tyre and a 108 ambulance arrived there to provide treatment to one of them who complained of backbone injury.
As the ambulance staff were about to provide help, a container truck lost control and ran into the two stationary vehicles, which were badly damaged.
The three deceased Bihar policemen were identified as constables Managar Singh (46 years), Kamal Ahmed Khan (30) and Sanjeep Kumar (30). Two staff members of the ambulance were injured and they were admitted to Narayana Hospital.
Madhu Prabhakar, 17 years, who was an intermediate student, succumbed to injuries which he received while providing help to Bihar police. The other deceased person’s identity was yet to be confirmed and the document found in his pocket gave his name as T. Nageswara Rao belonging to Padarupalli.
Superintendent of Police Navdeep Singh Grewal called on the injured persons at the District Headquarters Hospital in Nellore. He said that the accident took place because of the rash and negligent driving by the truck driver who is absconding. The truck has Haryana registration and was heading from Tamil Nadu to Uttar Pradesh.
The Bihar policemen, about seven in number, were on their way back home to Patna after delivering the electronic voting machines for repair at Bangalore.
