The Government General Hospital, Guntur, again found itself in the eye of a storm, after a regional newspaper published a picture of a surgery being done under the torch light of a mobile phone.

Guntur East MLA Sk. Mustafa staged a protest in front of the hospital. Minister for Health Kamineni Srinivas ordered an inquiry and would visit the hospital on Friday.

Superintendent, GGH, D.S Raju Naidu in a press release on Thursday said the surgery took place on G. Venkaiaamma, a native of Muppala mandal on February 10. The patient suffered injuries on her mouth following a dog bite and was recommended for a plastic surgery.

During the procedure, the electric supply snapped at 12.45 p.m. Even after the generator was switched on, one of the operation lights could not be switched on as the MCB tripped. For five minutes, the surgery was continued using the light from the mobile phone and later the lights were switched on after supply was restored.
