The State government which is banking big on port led development to pitchfork the coastal economy into a growth trajectory has submitted proposals worth Rs. 4,000 crore under Sagarmala project for development of port and connectivity infrastructure.
The first phase of infrastructure investment is expected for Masula and Bhavanapadu ports and also for the Rs.1,100 crore Viziangaram – Raipur railway line for which work has already commenced, according to Investment and Infrastructure department sources.
Sagarmala project was conceived to facilitate and promote port led direct and indirect development and to provide port and evacuation infrastructure to transport goods to and from ports quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively.
The project facilitates setting up of industries and manufacturing centres closer to ports for easy cargo movement. A meeting held between Chief Secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao and Additional Secretary Alok Srivastava, Ministry of Shipping, here on Thursday to review the Sagarmala project helped in taking forward State’s proposals.
The Rs.200 crore dedicated roads for carrying of cargo to and from ports till the main highways and modernisation of six operational ports- Visakhapatnam port, Gangavaram, Kakinada deep sea port and anchorage port, Krishnapatnam and Rava captive port.
Project to focus on development of ports and connectivity infrastructure
