December 30, 2014 12:47 am | Updated 12:47 am IST - SRIKAKULAM:

The State government will conduct an exclusive star turtle festival in Srikurmam on January 6 and 7 to create awareness on their importance and explain the measures for their protection.

Additional Joint Collector P. Rajanikantha Rao is reviewing the arrangements since many nature lovers from other places are expected to attend the event. As part of the festival, a photo exhibition and food stall will be set up at Srikurmam, which is one of the famous Hindu temples.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s incarnation in the form of tortoise. The presiding deity is also seen in the form of tortoise. An exclusive centre was also created within the temple for the protection of tortoises.

Srikakulam District Forest Officer B. Vijaya Kumar and his team members are extending support to other departments for making the festival a grand event.

Labour Minister K. Atchannaidu will formally inaugurate the festival on January 6, said Mr. Rajanikantha Rao.
